They are filled with a mix of mercury vapour and argon gas. When vapour-gas mix registers an electrical current, ultraviolet light (UV) is generated. While CFLs are slightly costlier than incandescent bulbs, they use less energy and last much longer. As a result, they can lead to significant energy savings over time.
